Kuala lumpur: The National AI Office (NAIO) is poised for its official institutionalisation on July 28, as announced by Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. This move marks a significant step in advancing Malaysia's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the NAIO, which is currently under the incubation of MyDIGITAL Corporation, will gain authoritative status to manage and coordinate AI initiatives across Malaysia upon its institutionalisation. The transition is set to enhance the nation's AI policies, governance, and ecosystem, fostering the development of AI technologies that align with Malaysia's vision of becoming an AI-driven nation by 2030.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo shared that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has earmarked July 28 for the official launch of the institutionalised NAIO. This initiative underscores Malaysia's strategic commitment to establishing itself as a leader in AI and digital transformation within the ASEAN region. The Prime Minister originally launched the NAIO on December 12, 2024, to cement this commitment.
The NAIO was approved by the Malaysian Cabinet on August 28, 2024, as a strategic initiative under the Digital Ministry. It aims to position Malaysia as a regional frontrunner in AI and a global catalyst for digital innovation. In terms of governance, Minister Gobind highlighted that the government is actively working on an AI Governance Framework and is in the process of drafting regulations and governance structures. A dedicated department within NAIO is tasked with this framework's development, with a standard office being established in Cyberjaya to support these efforts.
