Najib Refutes Claims of Hindering Probes into 1MDB and SRC

Kuala lumpur: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak addressed the High Court today, asserting that he did not impede investigations related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and SRC International Sdn Bhd cases. This statement was made during a re-examination session led by his counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, concerning a RM42 million civil suit filed against him by SRC and its subsidiary, Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the civil suit initiated in 2021 seeks to hold Najib accountable for the RM42 million, along with claims for damages due to knowing receipt, dishonest assistance, misfeasance in public office, and abuse of power. During the court proceedings, Muhammad Shafee questioned Najib about his tenure as prime minister and the investigations that took place after the financial matters became public. Najib confirmed that there were ongoing investigations and denied obstructing them at any point.

The court proceedings are set to continue before Justice Datuk Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan on February 9. Following the trial, Muhammad Shafee clarified previous reports alleging Najib's awareness of the source of funds deposited into his account. He reiterated that Najib maintains the position that the RM42 million was a donation from a Saudi monarch, as per his understanding and the court's earlier decisions.

Muhammad Shafee stated that Najib's belief remains unchanged regarding the origin of the funds, emphasizing that his client has not retracted his view that the monies received, including the RM42 million, were donations from Saudi Arabia.
