Kuala lumpur: The National Audit Department (JAN) is steadfastly upholding its role as the nation's audit institution, working independently and professionally to bolster accountability, transparency, and governance within the public sector, as stated by Auditor General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi. She emphasized that the audit findings are encapsulated in the Auditor General's Report (LKAN), serving as a pivotal component of the country's checks-and-balances framework.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Auditor General highlighted that her firm stance in delivering opinions on Financial Statements and formulating audit recommendations transcends mere reporting obligations to Parliament. The primary aim is to stimulate impactful corrective measures and enhancements in public sector management. Through the LKAN, deficiencies and non-compliance issues can be pinpointed, allowing for corrective actions and the reinforcement of systems and governance. The overarching objective is to ensure that public resources are managed with prudence and transparency, ultimately providing substantial value and benefits to the populace.
In her address at the 2026 Auditor General's Cup Debate Competition (PKAN 2026), themed '120 Years of the National Audit Department: Driving Accountability, Building an Integrity-Driven MADANI Generation', she underscored the importance of these audits. The inaugural PKAN 2026, which gathered 20 public higher education institutions nationwide, spanned three days from August 13, culminating in the final round held at the Parliament building today.
Furthermore, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul remarked in his speech that the debate competition offered a valuable platform for the youth to grasp the significance of accountability, governance, and public fund management, alongside appreciating JAN's role in safeguarding public trust. He asserted that the competition transcended a mere showcase of debating prowess, serving as a crucial venue for nurturing a younger generation adept at managing diverse opinions in a structured, rational, and respectful manner. He noted that a mature democracy hinges not just on strong arguments but also on respecting differences, conducting debates responsibly, and adhering to rules.
He expressed the necessity for Malaysia to cultivate a younger generation not only excelling academically but also possessing strong critical thinking, leadership courage, and an understanding of the nation's administrative and democratic processes. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) emerged victorious in the PKAN 2026, overcoming the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in the final round, which deliberated on the motion 'This House Believes That a Culture of Accountability Should Complement Punitive Action in Addressing Governance Failures'. IIUM secured the runner-up position, while Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) jointly held third place.
