National Water Policy Aims To Reduce NRW, Strengthen Water Supply – Fadillah

Tanjung bidara: The implementation of the National Water Policy will focus on key challenges in the water sector, including reducing the high level of non-revenue water (NRW) at the national level. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that the current average NRW rate is approximately 33.4 percent, with the government's target to lower it to 28 percent through a more comprehensive and integrated approach to ensure the country does not encounter water scarcity issues similar to those faced by other nations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the policy involves planning at both federal and state levels, emphasizing the overall management of water resources, including distribution and supply system efficiency. Fadillah highlighted the importance of ensuring water is safe, clean, and affordable, which involves protecting water resources to prevent situations where extensive processing makes water expensive.

Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, officiated the National-level World Water Day 2026 celebration at Tanjung Bidara, Masjid Tanah. The event was also attended by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. During his address, Fadillah mentioned that matching grants would be provided to states successfully reducing NRW rates below the set threshold, with reimbursement based on their level of achievement.

He elaborated that states like Kelantan, Kedah, Sabah, and Sarawak have recorded high NRW levels. To tackle implementation challenges, the government plans to establish a special task force to oversee all water-related projects, ensuring they are executed efficiently and any arising issues are promptly addressed.
