Kuala lumpur: New Zealand has pledged to enhance the export of safe and reliable halal meat products to Malaysia, following the exchange of the upgraded halal implementing arrangement (HIA) with Malaysia today. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized New Zealand's commitment to maintaining an open supply chain and resolving issues swiftly as they arise.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Luxon highlighted the importance of streamlined settings, strong communication, and effective regulatory oversight as key factors in building mutual certainty. He stated that New Zealand plans to support these efforts through data-driven logistics and faster, cleaner clearance for high-trust operators under the newly signed Customs Mutual Recognition Arrangement. The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Luxon further elaborated on the focus of enhancing halal standards and assurance through the HIA, which aims to provide clearer and more consistent rules for the halal industry in terms of registration, documentation, processing, labeling, and storage. Additionally, New Zealand is committed to diversifying and growing its halal product offerings, leveraging platforms like the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) in 2026 to explore new markets.
The exchange of the HIA, witnessed by Luxon and Ahmad Zahid, was conducted by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) Director-General Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee and New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia Mike Walsh. This initiative follows the announcement made in September 2024, where both countries committed to increasing bilateral trade by 50 percent by 2030.
