NorMin PDL population reach 5.9K, BJMP sets up programs

CAGAYAN DE ORO: The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Northern Mindanao (BJMP-10) bared on Tuesday that the number of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in the region has reached 5,996.

In a media briefing, Jail Chief Superintendent Cesar Langawin, the BJMP-10 director, said the figures were based on the latest record as of July 18.

While PDLs are housed within the BJMP dormitories, Langawin said they have established programs for livelihood and skills training, reintegration, and employment support.

Langawin said one factor in the increasing population of BJMP dormitories is that some qualified for release remained to stay for a longer period because of delays in documentary requirements.

He said this is why BJMP-10 maximizes its paralegal officers to expedite the papers of those PDLs who have completed serving their sentences.

“We have PDLs staying in the jail beyond the maximum penalty. So, what our paralegal officers are doing is to coordinate with the courts,” Langawin said.
