Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is in the final phase of finalising comprehensive amendments to the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Act 127) to address increasingly complex environmental issues. Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup stated that NRES is targeting to table the amendments in Parliament in early 2027.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup announced these developments during the 51st Department of Environment (DOE) Enforcement Day celebration. He emphasized that the amendments will empower Department of Environment enforcement officers with broader powers to take action against environmental challenges.
The Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster technology use in enforcement activities, mentioning the implementation of drones and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance monitoring capabilities. Kurup stressed that while technology is a vital tool, the real strength lies in the efficiency and instinct of the personnel operating it.
Arthur also mentioned that enforcement operations would be conducted in collaboration with other agencies, including the police, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency. This integrated approach aims to expand enforcement jurisdiction, allowing DOE officers to perform their duties more effectively.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Kurup noted that the ministry is reviewing amendments to Act 127 to strengthen the powers under the DOE. The goal is to continuously improve DOE operations and enhance the effectiveness of enforcement efforts.
