Old Bookstore Comes Alive Each National Month In Kuching

Kuching: When the National Month arrives each year, the three-decade-old Guang Ming Bookstore in Kenyalang Park here springs to life with rows of flags fluttering in front of it.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, for store owner Shirley Lau, 59, this is the most anticipated time of the year, especially as sales of books, magazines, and newspapers continue to decline. Flag sales, ranging from small ones priced at RM1.50 each to large banners priced at RM10 each, have become an income lifeline.

Lau shared that although current sales are not as substantial as before, there still exists a demand for flags. She markets the flags both in-store and online, shifting with the times to cater to all potential customers. The bookstore, which opened in 1994, was once a haven for bookworms in the 1980s and 1990s, when Kenyalang Park was the main shopping centre in Kuching.

Reminiscing about the past, Lau noted how the bookstore used to have books from various publishers, popular magazines, and newspapers in Chinese, Malay, and English. During those days, she was able to sell dozens of magazine copies daily. However, the shift in consumer habits to digital platforms has made it challenging to sell even 10 newspapers now.

Despite these challenges, the arrival of August each year brings a change in atmosphere as customers seek the national flag 'Jalur Gemilang' and the Sarawak flag 'Ibu Pertiwi' to decorate for the National Month. The flags are available in different sizes and fabrics, catering to customer preferences.

Lau has also embraced online platforms like Grab to facilitate purchases, yet she acknowledges that sales through this method have not yet met her expectations. The demand is particularly noticeable from nearby schools during the National Month.

For Lau, every flag sold signifies more than just profit; it symbolizes the resilience of her store amidst the changing times. She acknowledged the business challenges, noting that many long-time traders in Kenyalang Park have closed their businesses, transforming the area's atmosphere from its vibrant past.

Lau expressed her reluctance to pass the business to her children due to the challenges and uncertain profits. Despite this, she remains dedicated to offering quality goods and friendly service to ensure her store remains memorable to customers.

While the golden age of Guang Ming Bookstore as a popular destination may have passed, its owner remains hopeful for better fortunes, especially during the National Day celebrations.
