Onion Farming Project Aims to Cut Malaysia’s Import Dependency by 30 Percent by 2030

Kuala lumpur: The onion cultivation project undertaken by local farmers with the support of various government agencies is expected to be able to reduce the country's import dependency by up to 30 per cent by 2030, thus strengthening the country's food security agenda. Deputy Secretary-General (Development) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Luqman Ahmad, highlighted that Malaysia currently imports almost 100 per cent of its onion supply, valued at more than RM1 billion annually.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, apart from onions, Malaysia also faces issues of import dependency for corn and meat products. Consequently, efforts to bolster domestic production are being intensified in a phased and structured manner to mitigate the risk of food supply disruptions. Luqman stated that the government's initiative to introduce high-potential onion crops is a significant step towards reducing import values and enhancing food security.

Luqman explained that onion crops require about two months to harvest, providing quick returns to farmers. A pilot project has demonstrated that a 0.8-acre farm can generate nearly RM35,000 in one harvest season, showcasing the crop's commercial viability. He emphasized that with potential earnings between RM30,000 to RM35,000 within two months, onion farming is a productive venture that not only assists in reducing imports but also ensures a stable income for farmers.

Onion cultivation is currently being carried out in Sabah, covering about eight hectares, alongside efforts in Pahang. These initial steps aim to expand to other states, depending on land suitability and seed supply. Results from the pilot project in Kelantan will be utilized as seeds for distribution to other farmers, accompanied by research support and technology transfer from MARDI. Implementing agencies such as the Department of Agriculture and the Farmers' Organisations will further expand the initiative to provide comprehensive benefits to the country's agro-food sector.
