Opposition MP Allocation: Government Agrees to Establish Committee

Kuala Lumpur: A committee will be formed to address proposals concerning allocations for opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced. This move aims to facilitate a more consensus-driven and comprehensive resolution to the ongoing issue.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fadillah, who also leads the Government Consultative Council Committee, emphasized the importance of this committee in evaluating proposals from the opposition. He noted that only Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has approached him to discuss this matter so far. Fadillah mentioned that the government prioritizes consensus and aims to handle discussions privately, rather than through the media.

Fadillah, also serving as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, clarified that while Syed Saddiq has made numerous proposals, he essentially represents himself rather than the entire opposition. He highlighted the necessity of considering the broader picture, given that the opposition already has a leader, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. These remarks were made following a Special Committee Meeting on River Water Quality Deterioration.

Previously, Syed Saddiq indicated he had held five rounds of negotiations with Fadillah, as advised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but no positive outcomes have emerged. Fadillah further stated that he has yet to meet with the opposition leader, emphasizing the opposition's previous reluctance to negotiate allocations.

Prime Minister Anwar reiterated yesterday that no conditions have been imposed on opposition MPs to support him in exchange for allocations. This follows Perikatan Nasional's (PN) rejection of a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) proposed by the government concerning allocations for PN MPs.
