Kuching: The conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, by the Government of Japan on Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg recognises the state's efforts in advancing green energy and developing a low-carbon economy. The Sarawak Premier expressed his gratitude to the Japanese Government, especially Emperor Naruhito, describing the honour as recognition of Sarawak's progressive policies.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari expressed his appreciation, stating, "I wish to thank the Government of Japan, particularly the Emperor, for conferring on me the Order of the Rising Sun. I did not expect it, but I was informed of it. This award is not for me alone, but for the state of Sarawak - international recognition of the policies we are implementing, especially in the fields of energy, hydrogen and other (related) sectors." He made these remarks to reporters after attending the 29th Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Convocation Ceremony.
Abang Johari, who also serves as the UNIMAS pro-chancellor, noted Japan's interest in Sarawak's initiatives on new energy technologies, green energy, and zero-carbon footprint solutions. He highlighted Sarawak's ambitious plans to realise four key focus areas by 2035, including renewable energy, the development of carbon-free gas, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology, and semiconductor development to add value to local raw materials.
Additionally, Abang Johari mentioned Sarawak's efforts in strengthening its reforestation policy through the use of fast-growing tree species. These trees not only serve as natural carbon absorbers but also as a source of biomass for green energy, an effort recognised by Japan. "Our collaboration with Japan proves that Sarawak is on the right track towards a green and sustainable economy. This is a great honour, not only for me but also for all the leaders and people of Sarawak who are working to make the state a leader in green energy in the region," he stated.
The Order of the Rising Sun is one of the highest honours conferred by the Japanese Government on individuals who have made significant contributions to bilateral relations and global development. The Embassy of Japan announced that Abang Johari was among the recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations.
