Over 74,000 Malaysians Participate in Skills Training to Tackle AI and Automation

Accra:A total of 74,332 participants have engaged in upskilling and reskilling programs organized by the Department of Manpower as of August 31. These initiatives are designed to help the workforce adapt to the challenges posed by automation and artificial intelligence (AI).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan announced that HRD Corp had approved 19,084 training slots, supported by financial assistance amounting to RM47.67 million by August this year. This effort is part of the Ministry of Human Resources' strategy to address job displacement risks and employment changes due to automation and AI, particularly affecting low- and semi-skilled workers.

JTM provides short-term, modular, and customized training courses aligned with industry needs, incorporating new skills and technologies such as AI, the Internet of Things, automation systems, drone technology, green technology, electric vehicles, hydrogen technology, and entrepreneurship. Employers registered with HRD Corp can use their levies to fund upskilling, reskilling, and cross-skilling programs.

Khairul Firdaus highlighted that the Social Security Organisation offers funding for training fees and allowances through the *Skim LINDUNG Kerjaya* (Career Protection Scheme) to support workers in acquiring new skills. Starting October 1, 2026, the funding under the scheme will increase from a maximum of RM3,000 to RM7,000.

Additionally, the MyMahir AI Tour (JAM) and JAMx programs, managed by Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad, have benefitted more than 7,971 participants, providing practical exposure to AI applications for enhancing productivity and efficiency at work.

He also cited Farm Fresh Berhad's AI initiative to monitor product expiry dates, an investment of about RM14 million, which successfully reduced customer complaints by 30 percent. This example underscores the significance of training in enabling workers to adapt to technological advancements.
