Melaka: Kampung Chetti in Jalan Gajah Berang has secured an allocation exceeding RM100,000 from the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) to enhance its drainage system and several other facilities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kota Melaka Member of Parliament Khoo Poay Tiong announced that the project aims to address the recurring flash floods in the area. It is scheduled to commence following the Deepavali celebrations. The outdated drainage system has been a longstanding issue, and the upgrade is anticipated to provide a permanent solution. Khoo expressed gratitude to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming for approving the funds during an event attended by over 200 members of the Chetti community.

The allocation will also fund road resurfacing outside the community hall to facilitate more social and cultural activities. In celebration of the festival of lights, Khoo contributed RM10,000 to the Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple in the village from his parliamentary allocation.

On another note, Khoo urged the government and Petronas Gas Bhd to carry out regular inspections of underground gas pipelines in Taman Merdeka. This comes as a precaution following a gas explosion incident in Putra Heights, Selangor, last April. Taman Merdeka, a significant residential and industrial area within the Kota Melaka constituency, could pose safety risks if not adequately maintained. Khoo emphasized the need for regular inspections, citing the age of the pipelines and the concerns raised by the Putra Heights incident.
