Serdang: The Fishermen Database System (PADAN), developed by the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM), is poised to become the central database for verifying fishermen's eligibility for assistance and subsidies, including subsidised fuel purchases. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, announced the potential of PADAN, which is based on the concept of "One Database, A Million Benefits," during the launch event at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, PADAN aims to provide a centralised platform to digitise fishermen's records in a secure and integrated manner. Mohamad Sabu explained that this single reference system will facilitate eligibility data matching for assistance and subsidies, as well as community development programme planning. The integration of PADAN with LKIM's MyMinyak application is expected to enhance the verification process for fishermen's eligibility before any subsidised fuel transactions.
The minister highlighted that PADAN will enable real-time, evidence-based decision-making for policymakers, ensuring that allocations and incentives are tailored to the actual needs of the fishing community at every jetty and base. This approach promises a more transparent and efficient distribution of resources.
In addition to PADAN's launch, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged at the event, focusing on Sabah fish marketing to the Peninsula. The collaboration between the National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT) and Sandakan-based companies, Widegrowth Marine Products Sdn Bhd and Metro Jaya Seafood Sdn Bhd, aims to strengthen the supply network of fisheries products. The use of Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) technology will preserve the quality of fish during transportation to the Peninsular market.
Mohamad Sabu noted that sourcing additional supplies from Sabah will diversify domestic fish availability, stabilise prices, and reduce reliance on imports. This collaboration underscores NEKMAT's pivotal role in connecting local producers, industry players, and the retail market.
