Tanjung Malim:Police have arrested a Pakistani man following the discovery of 100 cartons of suspected smuggled cigarettes valued at RM36,000 on Jalan Douglas, Tanjung Malim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the arrest was made as part of Operation Taring Alpha 1, conducted by personnel from the Intelligence Branch of Battalion 3 General Operation Force based in Bidor. At around 1 pm, officers noticed a suspicious Toyota Harrier SUV on the road.

An inspection of the vehicle revealed two large boxes in the rear cargo area. These boxes contained 100 cartons of John brand cigarettes that were suspected to be smuggled and lacked valid Customs duty stamps.

The 48-year-old Pakistani man, who is a permanent resident in Malaysia and operates a grocery shop in Kangar, Perlis, was detained. The SUV used by the suspect was also confiscated for further investigation.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act. The confiscated cigarettes will be handed over to the Customs Department and Department of Chemistry for analysis.
