Manila: Malaca±ang on Tuesday called on resigned Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co to prove his innocence and respond to the allegations regarding his alleged involvement in anomalous flood control projects. In a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that Co's resignation does not absolve him of accountability amid his supposed links to the multi-billion peso flood control project scandal.
According to Philippines News Agency, Castro emphasized that Co's decision to resign is his own choice and does not exempt him from facing potential legal proceedings. "If he resigned, that's his choice. No one can stop him from making such a decision. But if he has a case and it's filed, he can't avoid it. He can't run away from it," she asserted.
Castro further urged Co to confront the allegations head-on, suggesting that if a case is filed, he should defend his rights and truth based on his evidence. "So, it's better if a case is filed against him, let him just fight for his rights and fight for the truth according to his evidence," she said.
Stressing the importance of transparency, Castro mentioned that Co should address the corruption allegations to avoid appearing guilty. "If his name is mentioned, he should definitely answer it. Because if he can't answer it and avoids it, he will only appear guilty. So, it's better for him to explain his side," she advised.
The Department of Justice has taken steps to locate Co by requesting a 'blue notice' from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). Co, accused of receiving kickbacks from dubious flood control projects, initially traveled to the United States for medical treatment. His travel clearance from the House of Representatives has since been revoked, but reports suggest he may have traveled to Paris, France. The issuance of the blue notice will assist Philippine authorities in monitoring Co's location and movements.
