Kota kinabalu: The struggle and resilience of the Palestinian people in facing constant pressure and security restrictions became the turning point for a Sino-Kadazan Muslim convert to hold firmly to the teachings of Islam and continue his efforts in the path of Allah.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Ritchie Jay Cheng, 44, stated that his visit to Palestine in 2020 was a life-changing experience that opened his eyes to the strength of faith among Muslims living under occupation. He recounted how his trip to Jerusalem with a Muslim travel agency before the COVID-19 pandemic allowed him to witness firsthand the patience and steadfastness of Palestinians in enduring generations of restrictions and hardships.
Cheng mentioned that he traveled with a group of friends and, although they were not permitted to enter Gaza, they spent time at Al-Aqsa Mosque. Throughout their stay, they experienced extremely strict security checks and were searched multiple times by authorities. What struck Cheng most was the calmness and strength displayed by the Palestinians during these challenging times, as he shared with reporters after the 2025 National MADANI Converts Convention (KEMUDI).
Earlier, Cheng, a businessman from Kota Kinabalu, was honored with the 2025 National Muslim Converts Figure award by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr. Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. As the chairman of the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association (MACMA), Cheng noted the Palestinians' kindness and generosity, expressing admiration for their ability to welcome and assist visitors despite the hardships imposed by the Zionist regime.
Cheng emphasized the importance of witnessing such resilience firsthand, which reinforced his understanding of how people of faith are constantly tested, yet remain patient and resilient even in the toughest situations. He also highlighted his role as deputy president of the Sabah Association of Umrah and Haj Travel Agencies, pointing out Palestine's historical and spiritual significance and its potential to contribute to the regional economy if peace and stability are restored.
He expressed optimism that, with stabilization, many travel agencies would once again include Palestine as a key pilgrimage destination, especially given the sacred significance of Al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims worldwide. Cheng, also recognized as the Special Maal Hijrah Figure for Kota Kinabalu in 2017, described the award received as a trust and responsibility to continue spreading the message of Islam through compassion and knowledge-sharing.
