Pangasinan runner wins 1,500m gold at ROTC Games Luzon leg

MANILA: Mary Rose Frias of Pangasinan province delivered the first gold medal in the Philippine Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Games Luzon leg after ruling the women’s 1,500m run at the Cavite State University (CvSU) track oval in Indang town on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old clocked 5:07.2 to beat teammate Mary Ann Delos Reyes (5:30.3) and Jeralyn Madamecilla of Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (6:19.0).

‘I arrived only last July 28 after competing at the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games in Legazpi, Albay. I wasn’t sure if I would come because of the typhoon,” said Frias, a business administration sophomore from Virgen Milagrosa University.

She ruled the 1,500m and 800m at the PRISAA.

In the Air Force division, Jean Claire Agawin of Fullbright College (6:56.5) prevailed over Dorothy Grace Draper (7:01.7) and Rio Crystelle Ariate (7:12.8) of Philippine State College of Aeronautics-FAB Campus.

topped the Army division.

Meanwhile, Macailla Jane Requierme of Malaybalay, Bukidnon registered 5.33m on her fourth attempt to win the women’s long jump in the Army division.

‘I’m so happy because I got my personal best because my goal is to improve,” commented the 20-year-old freshman from Rizal Technological University. Bernadeth Batoy and Jhancel Santos of Tarlac State University settled for the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Clarissa Pineda of Westmead International (3.85m) dominated the Navy division while Nikka Ann Magdato of Fullbright College (3.98m) ruled the Air Force division.

Winners in the men’s 1,500m run were Army’s Zhedrac Dave Fagsao (4:39.4) of Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, Navy’s Edu Garibay (4:25.4) of Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation, and Air Force’s Ronnel Gonzales (4:30.4) of Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Lipa.

In swimming, Navy’s Kirk Dominique Reyes and Janelle Kyla Chua bagged three gold medals each at the De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.

Reyes topped t
he boys’ 200m Individual Medley, 200m breaststroke, and 50m butterfly, while Chua won the girls’ 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 50m backstroke.

In women’s table tennis, Christine Jen Atienza of Lipa won the event for Air Force.
