Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hopes both Thailand and Cambodia will cease military engagements along their disputed borders and enter into peace talks soon. Describing the fresh skirmish between Thai and Cambodian troops early today as concerning, Anwar said he hopes to speak with the leaders of both nations later today to express his views.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized the importance of both countries in ASEAN, noting their proximity to Malaysia. He has been in communication with the Prime Ministers of both nations, urging them to stand down and consider negotiations. "They have tried, but I still think peace is the only option available," he told reporters after delivering his keynote address at the ASEAN Semiconductor Summit 2025 (ASEMIS) today.
Anwar mentioned that he had previously had initial discussions with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and the now-suspended Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra last month. He expressed a desire for further talks with them. Thailand's former defense chief, Phumtham Wechayachai, has been appointed acting Prime Minister after the Constitutional Court suspended Paetongtarn pending an ethics probe.
When questioned about the potential impact of the conflict on trade relations, Anwar commented that it was too early to discuss. He believes the situation is temporary and that both countries have their national interests at heart, seeking a peaceful resolution and continued engagement with ASEAN. Malaysia's role as the 2025 ASEAN Chair underscores its commitment to fostering peace in the region.
The conflict traces back to a diplomatic dispute that began on May 28, following a border clash along the Preah Vihear border, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Tensions escalated when Thailand downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia after a Thai soldier was injured by a landmine, believed to be newly planted. In retaliation, Cambodia lowered its diplomatic ties with Thailand.
Today's report indicated that a Thai civilian was killed, and three others, including a child, were seriously injured in a clash in the disputed border area. The two countries have been disputing an 817-km undemarcated border for decades, which continues to strain diplomatic relations.
