Peatland Fire in Johor Under Control, Smoke Not Affecting Singapore: JBPM

Johor bahru: The Johor Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is actively managing the smoke from a peatland fire at Jalan Sungai Kapal, Taman Bayu Damai, to prevent any impact on Singapore's airspace. Its deputy director, Assistant Fire Commissioner Muhammad Al Mustakim Abdul Hady, confirmed that the smoke from the three fire sites in Pengerang is currently under control and has not reached Singapore.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Assistant Fire Commissioner Al Mustakim shared that the State Disaster Management Committee's meeting revealed that the smoke has not yet reached Singapore's airspace. The department remains vigilant, continuously monitoring the smoke movement. Aerial operations, including the use of MI-17 helicopters for water bombing, are being deployed to extinguish the fire, mitigate smoke, and contain its spread.

The firefighting efforts in Pengerang have identified three main fire sites, of which two have been successfully extinguished. The operations are comprehensive, incorporating fire breaks and flooding techniques to manage the blaze and monitor the smoke output.

The Singapore National Environment Agency is also on alert, following reports from local media about the detection of smoke odors in various areas. In response to last Friday's fire, 153 residents from 50 families in Taman Bayu Damai have been relocated to two temporary evacuation centers.

As of midday, the fire department has successfully extinguished 54.8 percent of the affected areas. Aerial resources are slated to continue aiding containment efforts, particularly focusing on central zones.
