Penang: The majority of Penang state assemblymen today defended the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, describing it as a new public transport artery that will stimulate long-term economic growth, despite facing increased construction costs.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wong Yuee Harng (PH-Pengkalan Kota) emphasized the importance of the rail-based system as a solution to reduce congestion and address Penang's increasingly serious traffic problems. He stated that comprehensive infrastructure and transport are foundational to development and progress, ultimately benefiting passengers and regional stakeholders despite higher construction costs.
Wong expressed gratitude for the cooperation between Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), the LRT contractor, local representatives, and communities at the construction site. He noted that communication channels have been established to inform residents of upcoming works that may cause inconvenience, during the debate on the Penang 2026 Budget at the legislative assembly sitting.
Joseph Ng Soon Siang (PH-Air Itam) highlighted that the aspiration for an LRT system in Penang is a long-held dream, dating back over 30 years. He referenced a 1994 State Assembly Hansard entry recording a study by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) on the proposed LRT to address congestion and public transport weaknesses. Ng voiced his support for the Mutiara LRT, emphasizing the anticipation of Penang residents over the decades.
Opposition leader Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff (PN-Sungai Dua) called for the LRT's focus to genuinely benefit the people, emphasizing timely delivery, budget adherence, and avoiding financial liabilities for the state government. He expressed concern over the potential of the LRT becoming another "white elephant" and requested clarification on the estimated 236 land lots affected by land acquisition and the number of workers involved in the construction.
On November 8, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the extension of the Penang LRT project route to Seberang Perai, aiming for balanced development that benefits all levels of society. As Finance Minister, Anwar explained the increased cost results from extending the line to Seberang Perai after reviewing the original proposal, which only covered the island.
The 29.5-kilometre Mutiara LRT Line, featuring 21 stations, is designed to enhance connectivity between Penang Island and the mainland, reduce road congestion, and improve accessibility. The main route alignment extends from the proposed Penang South Reclamation site to Penang Sentral and the Komtar station in Georgetown, with train services set to operate alternately along the line.
The state assembly sitting is scheduled to resume tomorrow.
