Penang JBPM Channels RM20,000 To Help Students And Firefighters’ Children

Penang: The Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), through its Sports, Welfare and Cultural Association, contributed RM20,000 to purchase school supplies for 200 recipients under its Back to School programme. State JBPM director Mohamad Shoki Hamzah said the programme reflects the department's commitment beyond rescue duties to also include social responsibility to the community.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Shoki stated that of the total amount, RM10,000 was distributed to five primary and secondary schools in Batu Kawan, with each school receiving RM2,000, benefiting 100 students. The remaining RM10,000 was allocated to the children of JBPM personnel. Mohamad Shoki emphasized that this is the first time contributions have been extended to schools, specifically targeting underprivileged students. Although Batu Kawan is an industrial area, many locals are employed as fishermen and farmers. The initiative aims to alleviate the burden of preparing school necessities for these children while also supporting the families of firefighters.

He also noted that this year marks JBPM's Golden Jubilee as the country's rescue institution. The celebration is particularly significant as it highlights the continuity of its people-centered and humanitarian values after 50 years of service on the frontline of public safety.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who officiated the presentation ceremony at the Penang JBPM headquarters, commended JBPM's initiative. He stated that the effort not only assists JBPM personnel but also extends support to the community, demonstrating the agency's concern for local welfare. Chow emphasized that this whole-of-society spirit is crucial for Penang's progress as a progressive, resilient, and inclusive state, aligning economic growth with social justice.
