Penang: Penang, Johor, and Selangor accounted for 79.4 percent of Malaysia's total trade in July 2026, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM). In the Export-Import Statistics by State July 2026 report released today, DoSM stated that Malaysia's total trade for the month reached RM364.7 billion, with exports and imports valued at RM193.6 billion and RM171.1 billion, respectively.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang led as the foremost exporting state, contributing 48.4 percent to Malaysia's total exports. Johor followed with 19.1 percent, Selangor with 14.7 percent, Sarawak at 5.2 percent, and Kuala Lumpur at 2.9 percent. Penang also held the largest share of imports at 30 percent, trailed by Selangor at 23.4 percent, Johor at 22.9 percent, Kuala Lumpur at 9.6 percent, and Kedah at 3.9 percent.
The report highlighted that Malaysia's exports in July 2026 rose by RM53.5 billion, or 38.2 percent, compared to July 2025. This increase was primarily driven by higher exports from Penang (+RM40.4 billion), Johor (+RM10.1 billion), and Selangor (+RM3.7 billion). Other states showing export growth included Sarawak (+RM1.6 billion), Perak (+RM511.9 million), Kedah (+RM511.0 million), Kuala Lumpur (+RM507.0 million), Kelantan (+RM153.7 million), and Negeri Sembilan (+RM35.0 million). Conversely, several states experienced declines in exports, notably Perlis (-RM31.1 million), Melaka (-RM156.9 million), Terengganu (-RM208.8 million), Labuan (-RM405.1 million), Pahang (-RM1.0 billion), and Sabah (-RM1.9 billion).
DoSM also reported a rise in Malaysia's imports in July 2026, increasing by RM45.7 billion or 36.4 percent from the previous year. The growth in imports was mainly attributed to Penang (+RM21.8 billion), Selangor (+RM7.8 billion), Kuala Lumpur (+RM7.3 billion), and Johor (+RM7.3 billion), with additional contributions from Kedah (+RM1.5 billion), Sarawak (+RM810.2 million), Pahang (+RM789.5 million), Negeri Sembilan (+RM594.3 million), Sabah (+RM268.5 million), Perak (+RM180.3 million), and Labuan (+RM145.6 million). However, imports decreased in Terengganu (-RM4.0 million), Kelantan (-RM24.7 million), Perlis (-RM43.9 million), and Melaka (-RM1.3 billion).
