Penang Leads Malaysia in Medical Tourism Revenue with Significant Contribution

Penang: Penang accounts for 45 per cent of Malaysia's total medical tourism revenue until today, cementing its position as the country's leading medical tourism destination, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. He said the state welcomed more than 500,000 international patients in 2025, generating over RM1.1 billion in medical tourism revenue, reflecting sustained growth driven by strong collaboration between the public and private healthcare sectors.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Minister Chow highlighted that this achievement reflects years of investment by both the public and private sectors, the professionalism of healthcare workers, and the confidence patients have in Penang's healthcare system. He made these remarks during his first visit to the Northern Heart Hospital Penang, where he was joined by the hospital's chief executive officer Kelen Leong Choy Fun and general manager Katrina Felix.

Chow emphasized Malaysia's advantageous position to expand its presence in the global medical tourism industry amidst rising demand for quality and affordable healthcare worldwide. The country's high clinical standards, modern healthcare facilities, and skilled medical professionals provide a competitive edge in attracting international patients.

He noted that the goal extends beyond attracting more patients to developing higher-value healthcare services that generate broader economic benefits and enhance the wellbeing of the Malaysian population.

Meanwhile, Chow assured that the Penang government would continue collaborating with private healthcare providers to strengthen the state's medical ecosystem and ensure the industry's growth translates into tangible benefits for the local community. This includes creating more high-quality jobs, supporting local businesses, attracting investments in healthcare innovation, and enhancing healthcare services for Penangites.

Chow urged the Northern Heart Hospital to persist in investing in advanced medical technology, clinical excellence, and community outreach initiatives to bolster Penang's position as a regional healthcare hub.

Penang has consistently been Malaysia's top medical tourism destination, supported by internationally accredited hospitals, experienced medical specialists, and a well-established healthcare ecosystem, making the state a preferred choice for patients from across the region.
