Penang Sees Over 50% Surge in Cruise Ship Passengers

Penang:Penang Port, operating through the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT), has reported a significant increase of 52.12 percent in cruise ship passengers from January to September this year. The number of passengers reached 569,173, up from 374,171 during the same period last year.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Penang Port Commission (SPPP) chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin attributed the rise to a growth in international passengers, which amounted to 431,793 compared to 342,771 in the previous year. Meanwhile, the number of daily local passengers also saw a substantial increase, reaching 137,362 up from 31,400.

Additionally, the number of ship calls at SPCT rose to 538 ships, a significant jump from 134 ships in the same period last year. This increase reflects the continued confidence of the international shipping industry in Penang as a preferred destination, Yeoh noted in a statement.

Yeoh also emphasized the economic benefits brought by the presence of more cruise ships, enhancing sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and food and beverage. This growth further solidifies SPCT's role as a key driver in the development of maritime tourism and the northern region of the country.

He expressed optimism in maintaining this growth momentum through collaboration among port authorities, state governments, tourism agencies, and industry players. With its strategic location, port facilities, and distinctive cultural heritage, Penang Island holds great potential to emerge as a world-class cruise destination.
