Penang: Penang has significant potential to turn waste into new economic wealth by attracting high-technology foreign investments as a new driver of the state economy. Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican (BN-Bertam) emphasized the necessity for the state government to formulate a comprehensive green waste and high-technology e-waste master plan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Reezal Merican highlighted the robust potential of the e-waste recycling industry, which involves processing valuable metals like nickel, lithium, and cobalt. He noted that seven of Malaysia's 17 licensed companies are already operating in Penang, presenting an advantage that should be fully leveraged. This statement was made during the debate on the motion of thanks for the policy speech by Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib at the state legislative assembly sitting.
As the chairman of Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, Reezal Merican also underlined the importance of waste-to-energy (WTE) projects. These projects could not only help resolve solid waste issues but also generate energy. However, successful implementation requires meticulous planning and full backing from Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and the state's top leadership.
Further, he stressed that this is not merely an environmental issue but a major economic opportunity that should not be missed. He urged the state government to act swiftly to prevent Penang from falling behind in the green and circular economies.
In addition, Reezal Merican proposed a one-off RM500 incentive for each padi farmer to help them cope with the recent sharp rise in agricultural input costs. This proposal aims to ease the burden on farmers affected by the rising prices of fertilizers, pesticides, and other inputs. He emphasized the need for the state government to continue focusing on the agricultural sector, particularly padi cultivation, due to its critical role in the country's food security.
