Perak Allocates RM116.9 Million for Flood Mitigation in 2026 Budget

Perak: The Perak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) will receive an allocation of RM116.9 million for 2026 to implement flood mitigation measures, as announced by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. This allocation includes an additional RM5.4 million for management expenditure, emphasizing the state's commitment to strengthening its defenses against floods.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by families in flood-prone areas, stressing the importance of enhancing preventive measures and speeding up recovery processes. This comes amidst increasing allocations and various mitigation efforts that aim to prevent weather warnings from causing panic among residents in at-risk areas.

The budget allocation covers several key areas: RM10.4 million is designated for irrigation plan management maintenance, RM11.3 million for river management maintenance, RM9.2 million for agricultural irrigation schemes maintenance, RM3.6 million for mechanical and electrical maintenance, and RM0.9 million for hydrology facilities management maintenance. Additionally, RM14.0 million is set aside for development expenditure, which includes flood mitigation projects, river and beach management, and agricultural irrigation, among other initiatives.

Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad also announced several projects approved under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) due to strong collaboration with the federal government. These projects aim to reduce disaster risks and include RM50 million for river conservation projects, RM49.9 million for conservation efforts in the Kuala Kangsar district, RM75 million for Sabo works construction, and RM10 million for a beach erosion control project.

Perak has been significantly affected by recent floods, with 2,959 evacuees from 933 families currently housed in 35 relief centers across the state.
