Perak Assembly Elects Mohamad Hairul Amir As New Dewan Negara Senator

Perak: The Perak State Legislative Assembly today elected Perak PKR chairman Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri as a new Senator to represent the state in the Dewan Negara.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Hairul Amir was declared victorious by Perak State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid after securing 33 votes. He defeated the rival candidate, Perak PAS Dewan Ulama chief Muhammad Zulkifli Muhamad Zakaria, who garnered 26 votes.

The election motion, initiated by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, was held in accordance with Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution. This election was necessitated by a vacancy in the Dewan Negara seat, previously occupied by Amanah vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof, whose term concluded on May 24, 2026.

Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching, who is also the Teja assemblyman, nominated Mohamad Hairul Amir, 38, for the position. His nomination was supported by Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun, Lintang assemblyman and chairman of the Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture, and Food Industry Committee.

In contrast, the opposition put forward a nomination through Manjoi assemblyman Mohd Hafez Sabri, who proposed Muhammad Zulkifli. This nomination was backed by Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin, Sungai Manik assemblyman.

Upon the announcement of results, Speaker Mohammad Zahir confirmed Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri's election as Senator, stating that his name will be submitted promptly to the Office of the Secretary of the Senate to facilitate the completion of appointment procedures by the Senate Secretariat of the Malaysian Parliament. The assembly session concluded with an adjournment sine die.
