Batu gajah: The Perak Department of Environment (DOE) has collected chemical samples, allegedly linked to the deaths of 17 cows in Taman Tronoh Baru, Batu Gajah, after the animals were believed to have grazed on contaminated grass on Nov 5. Its director Datuk Dr Mohammad Ezani Mat Saleh said the samples were collected this morning and sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis to determine the type of chemicals which were dumped in the area.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the samples collected were taken from the solid material discarded at the site, while the state Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) gathered samples from the carcasses. These samples have been forwarded to the Chemistry Department, with results expected within a week to ascertain the nature of the discarded material and its possible industrial origins.

Yesterday, a farmer, R. Nithiananthan, 38, reported losses totaling approximately RM50,000 due to the incident, prompting a police report for further action. Mohammad Ezani stated that thorough investigations are underway in collaboration with the police, the state DVS, and the Batu Gajah District Council (MDBG), aiming to identify those responsible.

He further mentioned that individuals found guilty of this act would face prosecution under Section 34(b) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974. Efforts are being made to track down the suspects involved, with a call for anyone with information to assist the state DOE in their investigation.
