Perak: The Perak government is set to propose a significant upgrade to the East-West Highway (JRTB) that connects Gerik and Jeli, as announced by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. This proposal is aimed at enhancing the infrastructure and safety of the route that links Perak to the East Coast states.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the state government is also considering the development of a new alignment to replace the existing route. The proposal was discussed during a state executive council meeting, and Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, the State Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport Committee chairman, has been tasked with preparing the necessary documentation. The proposal will be presented to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his upcoming working visit to Lumut.

Saarani highlighted that the JRTB has not been under concession for 40 years, necessitating a comprehensive review. Certain sections of the road have deteriorated significantly, making simple repairs insufficient. The proposal includes considerations for road widening, construction materials, alignment, and essential elements like street lighting and road markings.

Additionally, the state government plans to propose enhancements for Gerik Hospital and the addition of medical specialists and facilities along the highway. Saarani emphasized the need for mobile police stations and fire and rescue brigades along the route to ensure a swift response in emergencies.

The urgency of these proposals was underscored by a recent tragic incident where 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris students lost their lives in a bus accident on the highway. The proposal aims to prevent such occurrences in the future by improving road safety and emergency response capabilities.
