Perak Records Highest Percentage of Elderly Population in Malaysia

Perak: Perak has the highest percentage of people aged 60 and above in Malaysia, accounting for 15.3 per cent of the state's total population of 2.6 million last year. National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) deputy chairman Juwairiya Zulkifli emphasized the need for serious attention to this demographic change, especially as the state is also experiencing a low birth rate and slow population growth of about 0.2 per cent during the same period.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the percentage of the population aged 60 and above in Perak increased from 14.9 per cent in 2024 to 15.3 per cent last year. This rapid ageing process in the state is not balanced with the population growth rate, raising concerns about the state's readiness for future challenges, particularly potential workforce shortages.

Juwairiya highlighted contributing factors such as the migration of young people to work outside the state and individuals returning to their hometowns after retirement. She warned that if not properly managed, Perak could face a shrinking workforce, an increase in the dependency ratio, and rising demand for healthcare and long-term care services.

The deputy chairman stated that ageing should not be perceived merely as a burden, as older people can still contribute to society if supported by a conducive environment and collaboration from relevant authorities. She called for strategic coordination among federal and state governments, local authorities, academic institutions, and the private sector to address these issues.

Juwairiya suggested that the government should standardize regulations and enforcement regarding the elderly care ecosystem to ensure quality and safe services for older people nationwide. This approach would help the government, private sector, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) provide more structured care services.

She emphasized the importance of focusing on the qualifications and backgrounds of workers in the elderly care sector to ensure that older people receive services from suitably skilled individuals. Special attention is required for elderly care, including safety, health, and the suitability of facilities and infrastructure at care centres or residences.
