Perlis JPJ Issues 741 Summonses To Foreign Drivers

Kangar: The Perlis Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a total of 741 JPJ(P)22 summons notices to foreign drivers for offences under the Road Transport Act 1987. These summonses were part of enforcement operations conducted across the state from January until last Tuesday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Perlis JPJ director Noraini Mohd Nawi highlighted that the most common offences committed by foreign drivers were technical violations, which accounted for 210 cases. Following these were offences related to driver licensing with 190 cases, other offences totaling 166, vehicle licensing violations with 140 cases, and 35 instances of tinted window violations.

Noraini explained during a press conference at the state JPJ office that the operation specifically targeted foreign drivers lacking a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL), those using vehicles without insurance coverage, drivers without an International Driving Permit (IDP), and those with outstanding summonses, among other violations.

Additionally, summonses were also issued to local vehicle owners who permitted foreign nationals to drive their vehicles without adhering to the required stipulations. During the operation period, Perlis JPJ seized 95 vehicles driven by foreign nationals for various offences under existing laws; this included a luxury vehicle. Among the seized vehicles, 65 were owned by locals, and 30 were owned by foreign nationals, consisting of 17 motorcycles, eight cars, and five Thai-registered vans.

Noraini further stated that from January to June of the current year, three foreign offenders appeared in court and were each fined RM750. Action was taken against 243 vehicles involving 468 offences, culminating in compound collections amounting to RM89,200.
