Kuala Lumpur:Budget 2027 in Malaysia has introduced a new dimension to individual income tax relief by expanding the scope to include pet-related expenses. This aims to alleviate the financial burden on pet owners.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as Finance Minister, announced the expansion during the budget presentation in Parliament. The expanded tax relief covers costs associated with adopting pets from registered shelters and utilizing registered veterinary services. This change reflects the government's recognition of the financial commitment involved in pet ownership.
The current lifestyle tax relief limit remains at RM2,500. The scope has been broadened to include digital literacy and AI technology expenses, but the total deduction limit is unchanged. This means qualifying expenses for pet adoption and veterinary services will be included within the existing limit.
Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that government policy must consider the diverse needs of society, even if it does not align with personal interests. He noted that while he does not personally keep cats, his daughter does, illustrating the separation between personal preferences and policy decisions.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the need for the budget to address broader social priorities. While supporting pet owners, the government aims to prioritize aiding those who struggle to meet basic needs. The measure of the budget's success will depend on effective implementation and the tangible benefits it provides to the community.
Overall, the 2027 Budget, titled "Reaching for the Sky, Rooted in the Earth," allocates RM510 billion, including government and private investments, to support economic growth and societal welfare.
