Ipoh: National oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has transitioned from being a net exporter to a net importer of fuel, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed. He emphasized that this shift highlights Malaysia's vulnerability to global energy supply challenges, despite its status as an oil-producing nation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that Petronas's current position necessitates imports to meet fuel demands. While the supply for the months of April and May is deemed sufficient, the situation for June remains uncertain. These comments were made during the Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme 2026. Anwar addressed the prevailing perception that Malaysia should remain unaffected by oil crises due to its domestic production, especially in light of ongoing conflicts in West Asia.
He further stressed the importance of collective understanding and collaboration among all parties to navigate the present circumstances and ensure the country's energy supply stability.
