PEYATIM PRODUCED 12,000 GRADUATES – PRESIDENT

GOPENG, The Orphans Welfare Organisation Malaysia (PEYATIM) has managed to produce 12,000 graduates, including those in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes till now.

PEYATIM president Prof Datuk Dr Tengku Mahmud Mansor said the success was thanks to the efforts of various parties in ensuring the welfare of orphans in the country.

‘All these graduates have achieved success in their respective fields, some are civil servants, specialist doctors and engineers,’ he said when met at the Semarak Kasih Muharram programme in conjunction with Orphans Day celeberations here today, adding that the number of orphans has risen as many parents died to do accidents and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘I believe there are over 150 orphanages but only 72 are registered with us, about half of the total.

‘Also, there are orphanages with capacity but no orphans, … we like to really help but there are those who just let these kids alone till things go wrong,’ he said.

Meanwhile, Perak Women, Fami
ly and Community Development, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Salbiah Mohamed said the state government has allocated RM400,000 to help children, especially orphans this year.

‘The total we have isn’t that big with the budget tabled by the state government, we are only able to channel RM400,000 to develop children’s infrastructure.

‘So that’s the funds that I use to see to the major needs of children and the focus will definitely be on their education, especially their infrastructure needs to ensure their comfort at home or orphanages,’ she added.
