PH Navy, UK eye stronger collaboration on hydrography

The Philippine Navy (PN) is looking to forge a partnership with the United Kingdom in terms of hydrography following the visit of a UK expert on Monday.

In a statement late Monday, Navy spokesperson Capt. Benjo Negranza said Rear Adm. Angus Essenhigh discussed maritime cooperation with the PN in the area of hydrography during his visit to Naval Station Jose Andrada, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

Hydrography is described as the “science that measures and describes the physical features of the navigational portion of the Earth’s surface and adjoining coastal areas.”

Essenhigh was welcomed by PN vice commander, Rear Adm. Caesar Bernard Valencia, who said that the visit of the UK national hydrographer provided an opportunity to further delve into hydrographic charting as a niche capability, emphasizing strategic investment and training initiatives.

“The discussions held during the visit are expected to lay the groundwork for future collaborations, reinforcing the commitment to advancing maritime capabilities,” Ne
granza said.

He added this undertaking stemmed from the PN visit of British Defense Minister Annabel Goldie last October when she reiterated UK’s intent to further strengthen defense and maritime cooperation with the PN.

“Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome, Rear Admiral Essenhigh underscored the mutual benefits of fostering cooperation in hydrography which serves as a testament to the shared vision of ensuring the safety and security of maritime activities in the region,” Negranza noted.
