PhilHealth and BFAR-11 Unite to Provide Health Coverage for Fisherfolk

Manila: The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation-Davao (PhilHealth-11) announced Tuesday that it has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Region 11 (BFAR-11), reinforcing their shared commitment to extend health coverage to fisherfolk communities.

According to Philippines News Agency, PhilHealth-11 Regional Vice President Harvey Carcedo stated that the MOA, signed on Monday, highlights the importance of inter-agency collaboration in ensuring that marginalized sectors, particularly those in fisheries, gain access to the full benefits of the National Health Insurance Program. Carcedo emphasized that this agreement represents a significant step toward ensuring that fisherfolk, who contribute significantly to the nation, are not excluded from the journey toward Universal Health Care.

He further noted that the initiative aims to eliminate the fear of hospital bills among fisherfolk, offering them peace of mind with assured health protection. By collaborating, both organizations are committed to uplifting communities and extending protection to every shore and harbor in the region.

BFAR-11 Regional Director Relly Garcia, represented by Dr. Elaine Vera Belvis, chief of the Fisheries Management, Regulatory and Enforcement Division (FMRED), highlighted that the partnership reflects the agencies' dedication to safeguarding the welfare of fishing communities. Garcia stressed the importance of ensuring that every fisherman and their family receive the health and financial protection they deserve for their hard work and perseverance.
