Johor Bahru: The National Congress of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), which has been postponed since last year, is now set to occur over a three-day period in Johor Bahru, beginning on May 23. PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh confirmed this following a meeting of the party’s Central Leadership Council chaired by President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the party’s youth wing, Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK), and the women’s wing, Wanita PKR, will conduct their respective congresses on the first day, May 23. The 2025 PKR National Congress will, for the first time, implement a ‘proportionate representation’ concept for delegates, a decision made during a Special Congress on December 15 last year. Preparations are reportedly proceeding smoothly, with notifications to be sent to all eligible delegates soon.
The congress was initially scheduled for December 14 and 15 at the Persada Johor Bahru International Convention Centre, with AMK and Wanita PKR slated to meet a day earlier at a different location. However, the congress was postponed on November 30 last year due to flooding in several states, including Johor.
Fuziah mentioned that the upcoming National Congress is anticipated to attract roughly 10,000 delegates in person, while over 20,000 delegates are expected to participate in the party election through online voting. To accommodate delegates from Sabah and Sarawak who need to vote in person, satellite voting centers will be established in Kuching, Sarawak, and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The list of delegates required to attend in person will be announced at a later date.
Fuziah also addressed the membership status of candidates involved in this year’s party polls. It was decided that any PKR member who becomes a candidate and subsequently joins another political party will have their membership revoked, disqualifying them from candidacy and nullifying their nomination. The Party Election Committee will announce the names of those affected.
