PM Anwar Confirms GEAR-uP Programme Progress and Future Investment Increases

Kuala Lumpur:The implementation of the GEAR-uP programme is proceeding as planned, with an increase in investments anticipated by the end of this year and end-2027, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the GEAR-uP programme, also known as the Government-linked Enterprises Activation and Reform Programme, was initiated by the Ministry of Finance a few years ago. Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, emphasized that the first year of the programme involved significant planning, research, and evaluation. He noted that past experiences have led to more cautious investment decisions.

Anwar addressed concerns regarding the programme during the Prime Minister's Question Time session in the Dewan Rakyat, responding to a question from Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman about accelerating investment disbursements and preventing fund misuse. He affirmed that political figures are prohibited from interfering in project selection, which is determined by a professional investment body.

In response to a question from Syahredzan Johan, Anwar stated that government-linked investment companies (GLICs) have committed RM120 billion in domestic direct investments for the 2024-2028 period. This amount is in addition to the existing RM440 billion in domestic public market investments. The involvement of GLICs, government-linked companies (GLCs), and statutory bodies aims to bolster the domestic economy's resilience under the MADANI Economy framework.

Anwar highlighted that GLICs are committed to investing RM120 billion in direct domestic investments from 2024 to 2028, based on their respective priorities and assessments. These investments align with the national agenda, considering interests such as heritage, the bumiputera community, and the local economy.
