Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today welcomed Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Tea Seiha, and Thailand's Acting Minister of Defence, General Nattaphon Narkphanit, for a courtesy call at his office in Perdana Putra. Anwar also participated in a closed-door meeting with the ministers and their respective delegations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, and Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar were also present during the meeting. The 30-minute discussion covered topics including the ceasefire and the General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting.
Anwar shared on Facebook that the meeting was meaningful, reaching a consensus to continue the dialogue and uphold the ceasefire along the Thailand-Cambodia border, effective since July 28. He expressed appreciation for Malaysia's role in facilitating the peace process, led by Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar.
Both parties agreed on several key points, such as full adherence to the ceasefire without any aggression, no increase or repositioning of troops, avoidance of provocative actions, and a strong commitment to safeguard civilians and infrastructure. Anwar also mentioned discussions on deploying the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to aid in monitoring efforts, humanitarian assistance, and medical coordination at the border.
Anwar reiterated Malaysia's commitment to supporting the peace process, emphasizing that lasting peace requires dialogue, mutual respect, and genuine friendship. Later today, the Thai and Cambodian delegations are set to convene at the Extraordinary GBC Meeting at Wisma Perwira Angkatan Tentera Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.
