Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today underscored that ASEAN's unity is more vital than ever as the region navigates intensifying geopolitical rivalry, economic fragmentation, and global uncertainty. Speaking in conjunction with ASEAN's 58th anniversary, Anwar said Malaysia is honoured to serve as ASEAN Chair this year and fully aware that it comes at a time of profound consequence not only in international affairs but also in how nations trade, work, and live.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that ASEAN was founded 58 years ago with the enduring purpose of maintaining peace, building trust, and fostering cooperation among neighbours. He stressed that this vision remains the bedrock of the ASEAN community today. In a video posted on his Facebook, Anwar emphasized ASEAN's ability to communicate clearly, coordinate effectively, and protect shared interests as key to its future relevance.
He pointed out that ASEAN must prepare its people for transitions such as digitalisation and decarbonisation. To adapt, advance, and thrive, the bloc should continue investing in skills, infrastructure, and institutional capacity. Anwar also noted that with a combined GDP of nearly USD4 trillion and a population of over 670 million, ASEAN has the potential to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030. However, he stressed that growth must be inclusive, sustainable, and broadly shared.
Anwar mentioned that Malaysia's Chairmanship focuses on these inclusive growth strategies, with the aim of passing a strong legacy to the Philippines, who will assume the Chair in 2026. Additionally, he welcomed the progress of Timor-Leste's accession, saying its inclusion will complete ASEAN's representation of all geographic Southeast Asia.
The Prime Minister also discussed the ASEAN Vision 2045, which sets long-term goals for a resilient, innovative, and people-centred region. He emphasized that the success of this vision depends on current actions, such as improving regional connectivity and strengthening food and energy security.
Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to ASEAN Centrality, highlighting the importance of the bloc remaining central to regional dialogue and cooperation, and addressing difficult issues constructively, including the situation in Myanmar. He reflected on ASEAN's progress and acknowledged the significant challenges ahead, emphasizing strategic foresight, mutual respect, trust, and a commitment to collaboration as essential for future success.
Anwar concluded with wishes for a meaningful 58th ASEAN Day, expressing hopes for continued cooperation, unity, and ASEAN's standing as a beacon of peace, progress, and partnership in the region and beyond.
