Yong Peng:Police are investigating the murder of 16-year-old Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal, which took place at a secondary school in Yong Peng, Batu Pahat. Resentment, possibly due to romantic rejection, is considered a potential motive.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad stated that the motive remains under examination as investigations proceed. The suspect, a 16-year-old male classmate of the victim, was detained for questioning. No other individuals have been implicated in the case so far.
Investigations conducted between October 4 and 8 led to the seizure of several items around Yong Peng, including an iron rod believed to have been used in the attack. The rod, measuring 96 centimeters and wrapped with a blue necktie, was reportedly used to strike Irene. The post-mortem report indicated that the victim suffered blows to the head, body, hands, and various other parts.
The crime scene suggested a struggle, with overturned tables and chairs and a broken flower pot, though the pot is not believed to have been used as a weapon. Additional seized items include an iPhone 13 Pro, clothing items, a pair of Adidas slippers, a decoder set, and sports apparel stained with what is believed to be blood. Other evidence includes a canvas bag with stationery, a backpack with educational materials, a pair of spectacles, a Yamaha key, a drinking bottle, attendance sheets, and a calculator. All items have been sent for analysis.
Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad mentioned there is no evidence of attempted rape. The suspect, who has no prior disciplinary record, is undergoing further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code. The case files are expected to be referred to the Johor Prosecution Director's Office for further instructions. Irene was found unconscious and covered in blood in a school hall on October 3 and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The suspect’s remand has been extended to assist in the ongoing investigation.
