Police To Dispatch Officers To Thailand For Investigation Of Malaysian Detained With Firearms

Kuala lumpur: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is set to send officers to Thailand to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the arrest of a Malaysian national found with rifles and ammunition in Sadao, Songkhla, last Saturday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that the male suspect is still in Thai custody. The investigation will proceed in close cooperation with Thai authorities. Initial reports from the Kedah contingent police headquarters indicate the suspect was apprehended with several rifles and rounds of ammunition in a vehicle with a Malaysian registration number.

Investigations are underway to explore allegations that the firearms were intended to be smuggled into Malaysia. Currently, only one individual has been arrested, but the investigation will expand to uncover the modus operandi and organisation behind this activity. Mohd Khalid addressed these issues during a press conference at the launch of the Diploma in Policing (MQA) and National Occupational Skills Standards (JPK) programme at the Kuala Kubu Bahru PDRM College.

The media previously reported that a Malaysian man was caught with two M16 assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, allegedly purchased in Thailand with the intent to smuggle them into Malaysia. Mohd Khalid reassured that security along the Malaysia-Thailand border remains intact.

In related developments, Mohd Khalid mentioned enhancements in the security measures for national leaders following an incident involving a local woman attempting to attack the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, during a National Day celebration. Increased bodyguard training and the inclusion of Special Action Unit and commando elements are planned to streamline officers' duties with the palace and state government.

Additionally, Khalid noted that the PDRM is yet to receive the official report of the second post-mortem on Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers' Training Unit (Palapes) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin. The second post-mortem was conducted last Saturday before his reburial at Kampung Rinching Hulu Muslim Cemetery in Semenyih.
