Kuala Lumpur: Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) is aiming to achieve a Mean Kilometres Between Failure (MKBF) of one million kilometres by the second quarter of 2026, with the goal of minimizing train breakdowns. Transport Minister Anthony Loke made this announcement while presenting the 2024 Prasarana Performance Report and 2025 plan, noting that the total number of train service disruptions decreased to 71 in 2024, down from 118 in 2023.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the reduction in disruptions represents a 33% improvement in train operation efficiency over the past year, affecting five train lines: the Kelana Jaya LRT line, Kajang Line and Putrajaya Line MRT, Monorail Line, and Ampang LRT Line services. Loke defined a disruption as a train being stationary for more than five minutes, with more serious disruptions involving stoppages exceeding 15 minutes. Despite the progress, Loke emphasized the need for further improvements, aiming to reduce disruptions even further in the current year.
Loke explained that the targeted MKBF of one million kilometres means that train services should experience only one disruption per million kilometres traveled. The MKBF report on public transportation services has been tracking Prasarana trains and shuttle buses since 2023. Additionally, Prasarana is targeting an average daily ridership of 1.4 million passengers by December, anticipating a 10 to 12% increase in train and bus passengers as the post-COVID-19 recovery continues.
The average daily ridership for public transport under Rapid increased to 1.18 million in 2024 from 955,000 in 2023, marking a 24% rise. In 2022, the figure stood at 681,000. This growth is seen as a positive development, nearing pre-COVID-19 levels from 2019. Loke also noted a marginal 5% improvement in company revenue in 2024, primarily driven by increased ridership.
Prasarana is exploring additional revenue streams, including advertising and corporate sponsorship, to supplement fare income. Loke mentioned potential revenue from station naming rights and corporate sponsorships. Moreover, the launch of new lines, such as LRT3 from Shah Alam to Klang, is expected to boost ridership further. Ensuring reliable service remains a key priority for Prasarana to enhance public confidence in using public transport.
