Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged religious leaders from all faiths to play a more significant role in promoting justice, compassion, and universal values amid growing global distrust and moral decline. In his opening remarks at the 2nd International Summit of Religious Leaders, Anwar emphasized the need for a united front among faith leaders to protect the essence of humanity and belief.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed concern over the decline in trust and the deficit among political leaders in understanding the true meaning of justice, humanity, and good values. He noted that while many global leaders speak of democracy and human rights, they often fail to consistently apply those values, particularly in interactions with other nations or communities.
Anwar appealed to religious leaders to take up the task of uniting people, promoting respect and understanding, and standing up for universal values with courage, beyond political hesitation. He highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a revelation of the international community's loss of moral clarity and justice.
He also reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to peace and harmony by engaging with all communities, acknowledging the challenges of satisfying everyone but emphasizing the importance of inclusive and continuous engagement. Anwar cited the principles of governance from the writings of Maqasid Syariah of Al-Shatibi, which include protecting life, property, honor, and dignity for all individuals.
Anwar stressed that while Malaysia respects freedom of speech, it will not tolerate incitement of racial or religious hatred, stating the importance of maintaining the country's social fabric.
The Second International Summit of Religious Leaders 2025, organized by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) in collaboration with the Muslim World League (MWL), also saw the presence of MWL Secretary-General Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Abdul Kareem al-Issa and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr. Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.
