Principals Gain Autonomy in Co-Teaching Implementation in Schools

Kuala lumpur: The co-teaching concept under the Education Ministry (MOE) will be implemented in stages to give autonomy to principals to determine its method of implementation in respective schools. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh stated that this measure aims to ensure that the implementation does not burden teachers and takes into account the preparedness of the schools and existing teaching staff.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wong highlighted that subject panitia and principals have the autonomy to decide on the co-teaching approach in schools. This includes deciding whether to maintain two teachers per class or to conduct learning with one teacher in case of a shortage of teaching staff. Schools currently have enough teachers for co-teaching for integrated subjects, but situations such as teachers being on sick leave or maternity leave may arise. In such cases, principals can choose to replace the absent teacher or proceed with one teacher for the integrated subject.

Wong explained that co-teaching is a pedagogical method involving two equal teachers working in synergy in a classroom to plan, implement, and interpret the teaching and learning process. Prior to full implementation, the ministry conducted a pioneer project involving 130 teachers at 65 primary schools to assess the method's effectiveness.

The ministry also plans to ensure that there is adequate teaching staff available to support the success of this initiative without imposing additional burdens on existing teachers. The Dewan Rakyat approved the management and development expenditure totaling RM66,198,630,600 allocated to the MOE under the Budget 2026, following a debate by 30 MPs. The parliamentary session will continue tomorrow.
