Kuala lumpur: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan clarified that the proposed charges for vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands should not be termed as toll payments. Instead, they should be considered vehicle charges applicable to a private road owned by the operator in the resort area.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Ahmad Maslan emphasized the importance of using precise terminology to prevent confusion among the public, particularly since the country already has 33 established toll concessionaires. He suggested that these vehicle charges should be specifically imposed on visitors utilizing the road for recreational purposes, while workers, landowners, and residents in the area should be exempt from such fees.
Dr Ahmad Maslan further elaborated on the potential implications of the vehicle charges, noting that if the operator sets the charges too high, it might deter visitors from coming to the area. He remarked that tourists might opt for destinations that do not impose such charges or lack private roads altogether. Additionally, he expressed his personal view that workers should not be subjected to these vehicle charges. These comments were made during the winding up of the ministry's committee-level debate on the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026 in the Dewan Rakyat.
