Shah Alam: The Selangor People's Tuition Programme (PTRS) has achieved notable success by decreasing the number of Form Four students at risk of failing the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in Selangor to approximately 700 this year. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari highlighted this accomplishment, noting the substantial reduction from 14,000 students in 2018 and around 2,000 last year.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this success is attributed to effective intervention and strong collaboration between the State Education Department, state agencies, and the Selangor government. During a press conference held after launching the 'Program Tekad Pendidikan Kita Selangor 2025,' Amirudin announced plans to expand the programme's reach. The state government intends to increase its allocation by RM1 million this year, enabling 20,000 to 30,000 Form Four and Five students to participate in PTRS.
Amirudin also stated that the Selangor Foundation is now tasked with coordinating the entire education ecosystem in the state, covering primary, secondary, and higher education. This move is part of the restructuring efforts of the state's education system in preparation for the Selangor Budget 2026, based on findings from the State Education and Higher Education Standing Committee meeting.
The 2026 Budget aims to enhance student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields and to strengthen intervention programmes to further reduce the number of students at risk of failing the SPM. In addition to formal education, the state government is focusing on developing students' personalities through extra-curricular programmes such as field trips and foster schools.
"These aspects are considered holistically, not just through formal programmes and educational activities but also through extra-curricular initiatives," Amirudin explained. At the event, he also launched the new PTRS 2025 module and the Didik Kasih (PDK) programme, a special initiative targeting primary school students with literacy and numeracy challenges.
