Public Universities Empowered to Decide on Online Learning Amid Hot Weather

Kuala lumpur: Public institutions of higher learning are permitted to independently determine their approach to addressing the ongoing hot weather, including the option to conduct online teaching and learning (PdP). Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir emphasized that while no university has yet reported issues related to the heat, the ministry is maintaining a flexible stance, allowing each university the autonomy to make its own decisions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Zambry highlighted that the varying conditions across campuses necessitate individual strategies. He noted that universities had previously implemented online learning during situations like the COVID-19 pandemic and flooding seasons, specifically for courses that did not require physical presence. This precedent supports the current allowance for universities to decide on similar measures during the hot weather spell.

The Meteorological Department of Malaysia (MetMalaysia) has indicated that the hot weather is likely to persist until the commencement of the Southwest Monsoon season in June, attributed to drier atmospheric conditions and reduced rainfall. Dr Zambry addressed these considerations during a meeting with university students at Dewan Perdana, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), highlighting the importance of adaptability in educational strategies to ensure student welfare and educational continuity.
