Sibu: The road upgrading project for Jalan Pulau Dudong in Sibu has entered the tender stage, as announced by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. Tiong, who is also the Dudong assemblyman, stated that the initial discussions for the plan took place with the Public Works Department (JKR) at the end of 2022. The project received approval in 2023 and was followed by the preparation of design drawings.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the project is anticipated to commence next year and is projected to take two years to complete. Tiong expressed gratitude to JKR for its review and approval and urged the relevant authorities to hasten the construction process once the tendering phase is concluded.

Tiong highlighted that the 7.5-kilometre road, which has previously experienced flooding of up to 3.34 metres, will be elevated to a minimum height of 3.88 metres, with certain sections in severe flood zones reaching up to 14 metres. The project aims to address long-standing flood and road subsidence issues, thereby enhancing safety and connectivity between Jalan Salim/Jalan Stabau and the road leading to Sibu Airport.

The minister noted that the improved route is expected to benefit over 300 residents from several longhouses along the stretch by enhancing travel convenience, reducing flood risks, and promoting local economic growth. Tiong expressed his hope that the project can commence soon so that residents may enjoy safer and more comfortable road conditions without further delay.
